Saku Koivu scored his second power-play goal of the game 1:05 into overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a season-opening 3-2 win over Carolina.

Mark Streit also scored. Andrei Markov had two assists for Montreal, which scored all three goals on the power play.

Erik Cole and Bret Hedican scored for Carolina, which began its 10th season in North Carolina by losing its fifth straight opener.

In other NHL action:

— Jiri Hudler scored in the shootout to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night in a rematch of the Western Conference finals. Dominik Hasek made three saves in a shootout after making 13 saves in the game.

— Ottawa edged Toronto 4-3 in overtime. Dany Heatley’s second goal of the game won it in OT. Heatley agreed to a new 6-year, $45 million deal just before the game.

— Colorado outscored Dallas 4-3. Paul Stastny had his first career hat trick and Andrew Brunette added three assists.
