Food Labels

I find myself reading the labels these days. Not because I have run out of books at home to read…but I want to look out for my health. Reading labels is very important to ensure that you are receiving the appropriate amounts of benefits and making sure you have the least amount of negatives.

Here are some things to look out for when reading the back of the box:

Ingredients are listed in order of largest to smallest. So if sugar is at the top of the list, this food may not be the healthiest choice.

Complex carbohydrates, which have more vitamins and minerals than simple sugars, are not listed on most food labels. But don’t fret…they are easy to calculate. Start with the Total Carbohydrates then subtract the Dietary Fiber and Sugars. The number you are left with is the Complex Carbohydrates.
