Student hopes stolen unicycle won’t prevent cycling tour

One incoming freshman may not be able to ride 500 miles in a cycling tour next month after his unicycle was stolen.
Just after midnight Friday, Dennis Guzman had his customized pride and joy taken from downtown Lafayette.
“It’s like someone taking your car and toy at the same time,” said Guzman, who’s enrolled at Purdue for the fall and has cycled around Purdue’s campus for a year.
In hopes of getting the unicycle returned, Guzman is offering a $100 reward for it. Guzman said the reward will satisfy the thief’s desperate need for some cash.
“If the person is trying to get a few dollars out of it, just bring it back to me and lie and take my 100 bucks,” said Guzman, who has filed a police report.
The cycling tour is important to Guzman because there are fewer than 10 unicyclists partaking – and he is one of them.
“This is something I have been looking forward to for a while,” Guzman said. “I don’t have many options right now.”
Thanks to a friend, a support fund has been set up to raise funds for a new unicycle if his original is not returned. The fund is at Lafayette Bank and Trust and is titled Purdue Unicyclist Team Replacement Fund.
The cost of the unicycle is roughly $1,000. Guzman said if the fund goes over that amount or his original is returned, the fund money will benefit the Purdue Unicycling and Juggling Club.
