It’s one of the most competitive summer camps Pellissippi State offers. Dozens of kids sign up every year for archery camp to test their skills behind a bow and arrow. It’s only the second day of camp, but the students have only one aim. Advertisement
“Just to get a perfect 10,” says 13year old Cathy Varga.
It’s Cathy’s second year at archery camp. Not only has she learned the basic skills of shooting a bow and arrow, but she’s learned something her mom would be very proud of.
“I just believe my posture has gotten better because you have to have good posture in archery,” Cathy says.
Coach Elzbieta Tworek has been an archer for 37 years. Originally from Poland, she competed competitively in the Olympics. Now, she’s one of only two coaches in Tennessee with the highest performance rank in the sport.
“It’s something magical about the colorful targets,” Elzbieta says. “It’s something magical about having your bow in your hand, and having arrows in your hand, and just using the bow and arrow, and let the arrow travel.”
Elzbieta hopes her camp will build the same passion for archery in her students.
“Well they learn how to have fun with archery,” Elzbieta says.
She also always keeps an eye open for raw talent.
“I’m looking for future Olympians,” she says.
With 11 year old Xavier Satterfield, she may have hit the bull’s eye. It’s his first year at archery camp, and he’s hit more perfect 10’s than he can count.
“Just the excitement when you pull it back and shoot,” Xavier says.
Archery gives him and the other students something they can aim for, as they take a shot towards the future.
